Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)
Reishi is unique among the species we offer here in that it is technically not edible. It is not toxic, however, it is tough, woody and extraordinarily bitter. Despite this, it has been highly esteemed for its purported health benefits for the better part of 2000 years in China, where it is known as the mushroom of immortality. Steeped in hot water, it makes a wonderful drink that is a healthy substitute for, or addition to, your morning coffee.
The mycelium of this species is remarkably tenacious and is used to make a vegan leather substitute, as well as various building and packing materials.
Reishi is an absolutely beautiful and unique looking mushroom that is suitable for a kind of mushroom bonzai. When fully grown the fruit bodies and substrate can be dried together and used as a tabletop accent piece or a component of naturalistic art.
