Supplemented Sawdust Block w/ Rye Grain Pocket, Mushroom Grow Bag w/ injection site - 3lb

Three pounds of sterilized supplemented sawdust with rye grain starter pocket in a gusseted autoclave bag with self healing injection site and air filter patch. Sterile and ready to accept mushroom culture.

The sawdust blocks are prepared with a mixture of hardwood sawdust, oat bran, and wood shavings. What sets these sawdust blocks apart from all others is the 1.5 cups of sterilized rye grain located at the injection site. By injecting through the self-healing foam disc, your mushroom culture can begin life on the grain, a much easier task for the fungi than growing directly on sawdust.

When the rye grain pocket is fully covered with white mushroom mycelium you can mix your bag, distributing the rye spawn throughout the sawdust. Recollect and compress back into block form and continue incubation. Once the sawdust block is completely white it may be used for mushroom production as a fruiting block or as spawn for expanding outdoor garden beds

To use as a fruiting block when growing Oysters, Lions Mane, or Reishi cut several X's into the sides of the bag over the block. Roll down the excess top bag material and secure with a clip or clothes pin (this will prevent mushrooms from forming inside the bag). Place in a suitable growing environment. These mushrooms will do well in normal room temperatures, but may stop growing if it gets too warm or cool.

When growing Shiitake mushrooms, remove block from the bag once it has become completely white. Place in a suitable growing environment, and keep temperatures cool (50-70F). The mushrooms will form as small bumps and rapidly mature. The block will develop a brown, tough "skin" as it ages, this is good! Keep it moist by misting daily!

Maitake mushrooms should remain enclosed in the bag until the small "brain-like" primordia begin forming on the block's surface. Allow these to develop for a few days, then remove the excess bag material above the block, leaving a 1-2 inch collar above the block to help retain moisture. Place in a suitable growing environment. Mist daily with distilled or bottled water. Keep temperature around 65-75F. Once fruited and harvested, the block should then be buried in an outdoor shade mulch bed, as this is the only way it will reliably produce a second or third time. Outdoor fruitings can take some time after the block is buried, so keep it moist and be patient.

Pioppino mushroom should also be allowed to form baby mushrooms while the block is still contained in the bag. Once the primordia is well formed, remove the excess bag material above the block, leaving a small collar above the block to help retain moisture. Be careful not to damage the clusters of primodia, which may be forming near the edges of the block near the bag. Place in a suitable growing environment. Mist daily with distilled or bottled water. Keep temperature around 60F. Once fruited and harvested, the block should then be buried in an outdoor shade mulch bed, as this is the only way it will reliably produce a second or third time. Outdoor fruitings can take some time after the block is buried, so keep it moist and be patient.

Suitable growing environments can be constructed from old aquariums, rubbermaid type storage containers, or by simply using a plastic bag draped loosely over the block. The goal with any mushroom growing environment is to supply ample humidity, keep temperatures stable, and supply fresh air on a regular basis. This may require daily misting with distilled or bottled water (clean water), and frequent fresh air fanning of enclosed chambers (such as aquariums).

Sold as single bags for $15, packs of four bags for $49, and packs of ten bags for $99. Choose from the "Number of Bags" drop down box below to receive bulk discounts.
