Take a look at these stunning amadou bags (purses really), hand crafted from mushrooms in Korond Romania! These are created with amadou, the soft, felt-like fibers found in Fomes fomentarius (tinder fungus). These traditional Romanian bags are imported directly from the maker, Mako Csaba. Each one is hand crafted so please allow for variation in color and type and arrangement of adornments. We've put a few examples in the product images above.
The bags have a soft outer texture, the amadou stiffened in the front and back, but softer on the sides to allow them to expand. They are lined with a pale lavender linen print, so the amadou is not directly exposed on the interior. The "clasp" is held naturally by tucking the tail of the flap into a slot on the front. It's actually pretty secure. The straps are also made of tinder fungus, and securely attached to the bag. They should not be submerged, but can stand a little water.
Approximate dimensions: 10"w x 4.5"h x 7"h
You can fit a one quart sized mason jar inside and other stuff and still close the flap.
Amadou, the soft fibers of Fomes fomentarius, was used by ancient people as tinder to light fires. It is highly flammable and catches sparks well. The whole mushroom was often used as a smoldering coal to transport fire. Material made with amadou is flammable, keep it away from sparks and open flame!
